Call For Proposals To Host the 2012 International Conference on Thermoelectrics, ICT2012The following is an announcement from Professor Mike Rowe, Chair ITS 2012 Conference Proposals Committee.
Dear Prospective Conference Organizer, The International Thermoelectric Society (ITS) is soliciting organizations interested in hosting its 31st annual International Conference on Thermoelectrics (ICT) in the year 2012. The ICT is the most important annual meeting for scientists, engineers and industry in the field of thermoelectric research, development of new materials and applications in power generation, refrigeration, thermal management and sensing equipment. The international prestige of this conference has continued to grow with attendance at the 2009 ITC at Freiburg exceeding 600. ITS typically holds a three year rotation for conference sites between Europe, Asia and the Americas, where most of the activities in thermoelectrics are located. In 2012, the ICT is scheduled to return to Europe. Thus, ITS's preference is for candidate organizations, especially universities and national laboratories, located in Europe to host ICT2012. However, that does not preclude ITS from entertaining strong proposals from other parts of the world and other types of organizations. Interested parties should first send, preferably by e-mail, a brief notice of intent to propose hosting, to the ITS Conference Proposals Committee Chair. Upon receipt of the notice, details will be provided relative to anticipated conference organizers responsibilities, guidelines and other ITS expectations. Full proposals should be sent, as early as possible as but no later than June 1st 2010, preferably by e-mail to Professor Mike Rowe or Professor Peter Rogl. Proposals should include relevant details including host organization, location, preliminary dates, Conference Chairperson, projected sponsors and prospects for financial support, and accessibility; briefly state the expected advantages to the ITS for awarding the conference organization to you; describe accommodation facilities, travel connections, plans for accompanying persons, the possibility of holding short courses, evening events; last but not least, the expected registration costs for regular participants, students and accompanying persons. The ITS Board plans on reviewing the proposals at the annual ITS Board Meeting immediately prior to ICT2010 and award organization of the conference at the 2010 ICT in Shanghai, China. You may be invited to give a brief presentation on your proposal to the ITS Board at the conference in China. On behalf of the International Thermoelectric Society, I am looking forward to your proposals. Best regards, David Michael Rowe Chair ITS 2012 Conference Proposals Committee Honorary Research Professor at Cardiff School of Engineering

Finland supports Norway's project to replace Russia's radioactive RTG lighthouses in the Gulf of FinlandFinish Government Press Release
11.11.2009 8.35
On 10 November, Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb and his Norwegian counterpart Jonas Gahr Støre signed a cooperation agreement on the replacement of Russia’s radioactive RTG (radioisotope thermoelectric generator) lighthouses in the Gulf of Finland. These risk-prone lighthouses, 87 in all, are located mostly in the sea area off the City of Vyborg. They will be provided with alternative power sources, such as solar panels. Finland is committed to paying 1.5 million euros towards the project led by Norway. The total budget of the three-year project is about 10 million euros, most of which will be covered by Norway.
The project, to be carried out in 2009–2011, is part of the Global Partnership programme of the G8 countries. The principal financier of the programme is the United States. So far funding of RTG projects has been shared among the United States, Russia, Canada, Norway and France. Norway already has experience of the replacement of power sources in 153 RTG lighthouses in the Barents Sea and has the necessary agreements and cooperation relations with Russia. Russia will provide the workforce needed for disassembly, transport, interim storage and disposal. Finland’s input consists of a financial contribution, most of which is given to Norway. A maximum of 10 per cent of the total sum is allocated to the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland (STUK), which will provide expert services for the project on behalf of Finland. The project will improve safety at sea in the area and will prevent groups, such as terrorists, from getting hold of radioactive materials. The RTG lighthouses in the Gulf of Finland were recently provided with an alarm system funded by the United States; this system alerts the Russian Coast Guard if unauthorised persons try to dismount the radioactive power source. The RTG sources are replaced not only because of the risk of unauthorised use but also because they have aged: their power is falling and the tightness of the sources is decreasing. Because of radioactive leaks, it would be more difficult and more expensive to recover them later. However, leaks do not pose any danger to the environment or to people disassembling the devices because the sources are inside protective casings. The project is a good example of both Nordic and tripartite neighbouring area cooperation. Norway’s role as the initiator, project leader and financier is crucial.
