+- USDoE Awards US$2M to PPG team for Advanced TE Materials

The US Department of Energy released the following in a News Article on Nov. 12, 2003:

-----
Advanced Thermoelectric Materials for Efficient Waste Heat Recovery in
Process Industries – PPG Industries, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
in collaboration with Visteon Automotive Systems, Owens-Illinois,
Leadbetter, Michigan Technological University, and Pacific Northwest
National Laboratory, will develop high-efficiency thermoelectric energy
conversion materials and technology to recover waste energy from exhaust
gas and other infrastructure heat losses in industrial processing
plants. Significant energy efficiency improvements are expected for
process industries through retrofitting of furnaces with thermoelectric
generators for recovery and reuse of waste heat from melting. DOE will
contribute $1,950,000 of the total project cost of $3,615,000 for the
three-year project. Joni Pattock (jpattock@ppg.com).

+- BSST seeks Manager & CAD designer
Posted Nov. 16, 2003. For details see:
http://www.zts.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=2933

BSST is the leading developer of high-efficiency thermoelectric cooling, heating and power generation systems to replace conventional compressor based HVAC electronics and other temperature control systems. BSST’s parent, Amerigon Incorporated, is the world’s largest supplier of thermoelectric systems. BSST itself is a small, nimble and highly talented team of technologists and seasoned managers.

Two technical positions have opened as the consequence of our recent rapid growth.

Program Technical Manager

An exciting position for a very talented, strong program manager. This is a hands-on position to lead BSST’s program activities with a major temperature control systems supplier. The successful candidate will team with BSST’s and the supplier’s personnel to develop a pioneering generation of solid-state, temperature control systems that expand the supplier’s product offerings.
The manager is responsible for planning, organizing, controlling, developing and completing programs. The manager will have 3-4 direct reports and efficient and timely support from very seasoned engineering specialists and technologists. Minimum of a BS degree and 10 years of hands-on experience in the electromechanical or mechanical subsystems or components is required. The position reports to the President of BSST.

CAD Designer

This is an excellent position for a very talented designer who is capable of interfacing with senior engineers to develop a new generation of thermoelectric systems. Minimum 3 years recent experience using IDEAS or PROE, and BS degree or equivalent. Must be proficient in the design of small mechanical or electromechanical components. Familiarity with design of injection molded plastic parts, machined parts and metal stampings is required. Electromechanical packaging experience (PCBs, convectors, etc.) is a plus. Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (ASME 14.5M-1994), and metric system expertise are required.

BSST is located twelve minutes east of Pasadena near the intersection of the 605 and the 210 freeways in Irwindale. BSST is a smoke-free and drug-free environment.

Please send cover letter and resume to mbanda@bsst.com. EOE.

John Fairbanks, +1 (202) 586-8066, john.fairbanks@ee.doe.gov

The dates for the High Efficiency Thermoelectrics Workshop at the
Loews Coronado Bay Resort (San Diego area) have been revised, in order to
accommodate Government per diem rates for all attendees. The new dates are
February 17-20, 2004. Commercially successful high efficiency
thermoelectrics could have a major effect on the world energy consumption.
The purpose of this meeting is to develop a strategy to accelerate the
development of the science of high efficiency thermoelectrics and integrate
it with appropriate commercialization considerations. Our approach is the
parallel development of advanced fabrication systems and some pilot
applications to provide feedback to investigators of the fundamental
technology. Accordingly, we are organizing Sessions for this Workshop as
follows :

1 - Potential applications of high efficiency thermoelectrics

2 - Status of high efficiency thermoelectrics (Principal
Investigators)

3 - Directions to enhance the understanding of the science of high
efficiency thermoelectrics (National Laboratories, Academia and
Commercial organizations)

4 - Considerations related to large scale fabrication and heat
transfer

5 - Panel discussion on possible opportunities (Nanotechnology
Research Community)

6 - Panel discussion on potential commercialization interests: "At
what level would the technology have to be to be considered an
acceptable market risk for commercial involvement?"

7 - US and EU Government interest/role in high efficiency
thermoelectrics

8 - Overview of the Congressional budget cycle

Our perception is that a major opportunity exists for thermoelectrics
in the transportation sector, both for direct conversion of heat to
electricity as well as for vehicular air conditioning/heating. Therefore,
we would establish a Steering Committee from the vehicle industry to
provide program guidance and track this technology . This thermoelectric
production base could eventually lead to a broad range of commercial
applications.
If you would like to make a presentation in any of these Sessions or
be part of one of the panels ,
please contact me . Could you also suggest any additional presenters that
we should invite? Can you also recommend individual panel members or
participants? If you have any additional comments /suggestions, I would
like to hear from you.
