+-  Bush: The Moon and Mars on a budget

Various wire services are reporting that US President G. W. Bush today called on Americans to go "forward into the Universe" by returning to the Moon as early as 2015, and from there onto Mars. Bush also called for the US to withdraw from the International Space Station by 2010 and retire the space shuttle fleet.

US$11 billion of existing funding and an additional US$1B of new funding will be directed to the new initiative over the next 5 years. According to the US President "only human beings are capable of adapting to the inevitable uncertainties posed by space flight."

One wonders if there will still be room in the budget for the much less expensive (but apparently less 'adaptable') robotic missions, such as the rover 'Spirit' successfully deployed on Mars earlier this month.

+- CalTech/JPL Thermoelectric Postdoc

This in from Jeff Snyder at JPL:

Please post or distribute to interested students

Postdoctoral Position Available
California Institute of Technology/Jet Propulsion Laboratory
Solid State Synthesis of Thermoelectric Materials

Thermoelectric Materials
A one-year post-doctoral position at the California Institute of Technology/Jet Propulsion Lab is open immediately in the area of synthesis of thermoelectric materials. Under the auspices of NASA/JPL, materials that have demonstrated the combined properties (above 1000°C) of high Seebeck coefficient, high electrical conductivity and low thermal conductivity will be synthesized and developed for use on NASA spacecraft. The materials of interest are refractory, conducting chalcogenides, antimonides, arsenides and clathrates. The successful applicant will have experience in synthesis of air sensitive materials at high temperatures and several characterization methodologies including X-ray diffraction,  electron microscopy (SEM and microprobe), thermal analysis (TGA, DSC and DTA), and electrical and thermal transport measurements. Depending on progress and the funding situation, the position may be extended for a second year.

Applicants should send
-CV
-three letters of recommendation
-two relevant publications

to:
