I wish to draw your attention to a recent Physical Review Letter,
Ishay, J. S., Pertsis, V., Rave, E., Goren, A. & Bergman, D. J. 2003=20
Natural Thermoelectric Heat Pump in Social Wasps. Phys. Rev. Lett. 90,=
218102,
in which the authors report a remarkable finding natural thermoelectric=20
coolers in wasps. Infrared photographs coupled with an inexorable series=20
of logical deductions reach the conclusion that these insects can cool=20
themselves to temperatures below ambient by means of an active heat pump=20
resembling (with persuasive photographic evidence showing an uncanny=20
resemblance) a cascaded thermoelectric cooler built by "Marlowe=20
Industries." I can't be sure if this is the same as the well known=20
thermoelectric manufacturer I've known as "Marlow Industries," but I'm sure=
=20
landing the hornet concession would boost their bottom line.
Befitting the well known reliability of PRL reports, the wasp story has=20
already been picked by PhysicsWeb
story here has been missed. Aside from the apparent 2nd law violation, the=
=20
real story is the control experiment wherein even dead wasps could also=20
cool themselves to temperatures below ambient. True, the dead ones were=20
not as efficient as the live ones. But for my money, the DWTEC (Dead Wasp=
=20
TE Cooler) is the one to watch.

That's all for today. Let me know if I forgot anything!
Or if you have News you'd like to pass along... pass it along to me!
