Listmaster Note:

Accidentally I sent out a ZTnews this morning which was an exact
duplicate of the Oct. 24, 2007 issue. My apologies to those who
received duplicates. Below is an entirely new issue.

+- Recent "Google Alerts" on Thermoelectrics
http://www.zts.com/node/5270

Google.com is amazing. I have a "Google Alert" set to email me when new
webpages come appear which mention thermoelectrics. Many of these hits
concern "thermoelectric power plants", which includes anything that
produces electricity by burning something (as opposed to hydroelectric,
solar or nuclear, for example).

But here are some recent hits related to thermoelectric energy conversion:

* NASA To Accelerate Space Nuclear Power [1]
NASA reportedly plans use nuclear power much more frequently, based on
Stirling cycle nuclear power systems being developed by Lockheed-Martin
and said to be four times as powerful as previously used RTGs.

* Nations Looking For a Piece of the Exploration Pie [2]
China reportedly plans to use a Pu-238 Radioisotope Thermoelectric
Generator for a lunar lander mission planned for 2012-2015

* Scientists Mark Cassini Saturn Probe's 10th Anniversary [3]
Cassini has been out there 10 years now, and the RTG just keeps on going.

* Wireless EEG System Powered by Body Heat [4]
EEG & radio need only 0.8 mW, provided by body heat and a TE generator

* Keep Your Lunch Fresh With the Power of NASA Technology [5]
A TE beverage cooler with a digital LED readout.

* Thermoelectric generators go to infinity and way beyond [6]
A blog piece on TE generators, with some nice links to pictures of
generators going back to the 1800's.

* Thermoelectric cooler available from Warsash Scientific [7]
A marketing blurb for a distributor of Marlow TE modules

+- Maria Telkes: Thermoelectric Pioneer
http://www.zts.com/node/5268

At the ECT2007 [1] I had conversation about the discovery of Bismuth
Telluride as a thermoelectric material and Mr. K. Fukada of Komatsu
pointed out that Maria Telkes mentions Bi2Te3 years before Goldsmid
reported high ZT values in her brilliant 1947 paper:

Telkes, M. (1947). "The Efficiency of Thermoelectric Generators.
I." Journal of Applied Physics 18(12): 1116-1127. [2]

The paper is still a good read today.

Her title suggests she intended to write "The Efficiency of
Thermoelectric Generators. II." but I've never seen it. The Journal of
Applied Physics lists only two further papers by Telkes:

Telkes, M. (1954). "Solar Thermoelectric Generators." Journal of
Applied Physics 25(6): 765-777. [3]

and

Telkes, M. (1954). "Power Output of Thermoelectric Generators."
Journal of Applied Physics 25(8): 1058-1059. [4]

so if anyone has seen a "Generators. II" paper, please let me know.

Here "Solar" paper should also be of some interest today since the US
DoE is currently funding some solar thermoelectric R&D. Telkes suggested:

"Further development is needed to determine their economical value,"

which surely is still true, but climate change may alter the assesment
considerably today.

+- CORRECTION: ECT2008 To Be Held In Paris

The text of the announcement in the previous ZTnews reffered to ECT2009
in Paris. ECT2009 will be held in Freiburg, Germany. ECT2008 will be
held in Paris.

The corrected announcement is below. Here is an email from the ECT2008
Chairman:

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to inform you that the 6th European Conference on
Thermoelectrics "ECT2008" will be held from July 2nd to 4th, 2008 in
Paris, France. It will take place in the center of Paris in the "Ecole
Normale Supérieure de Chimie de Paris - ENSCP" near the Latin Quarter
with easy connections to the main Paris airports (and North and East
railway stations).

The 1st of July will be devoted to the 2nd meeting of the French GDR
(Groupe de Recherches) on Thermoelectricity created by the CNRS in 2007
and will take place at the same location.

This very preliminary information is intended to have you book some time
in your calendar so we, myself and the local committee, can welcome you
in Paris in July 2008.

Claude Godart, Chairman
